This guide is to help show you different ways you can level, how to get some starter gear or just give you ideas if you have no idea what you're doing.

Adventure Guide

Set of new goals for level 1–79 characters to guide a player's journey while leveling up in Guild Wars 2. Listed on the right side of the UI along with your other objectives. Completing them will grant substantial experience rewards to leveling characters. Level 80 characters can complete tasks but will receive significantly reduced experience rewards.

  • The achievements for the Character Adventure Guide are character specific, not account based.

  • These achievements do not award any achievement points.

Level Boosts

Level 80 Boost - rewarded to players upon purchasing one of the Guild Wars 2 expansions. You can also purchase from the Gemstore - Black Lion Instant Level 80 Ticket. This is obviously the easiest way to level, but heavily recommended that you avoid boosting your first character as you won't know anything about the game and what you should do next.

Using this on a character who is below level 80 will grant you an option to teleport to The Silverwastes. You can also undo the boost and use it again on another character/class if you don't like the class you were testing out.

Map Completion

Exploring the world and discovering new areas is the primary way to level early on. Completing hero challenges and hearts or uncovering vistas or waypoints will grant experience. Once completed, a blue bonus chest will be awarded to the player.

You can also speed up your leveling even more by activating one or more Experience Modifiers:

  • Food

  • Utilities - Example: Rough Sharpening Stone

  • Guild XP Gain

  • Guild Exp Banner

  • Upgrade gear often

  • Party up (LFG)

Dungeons

Dungeons are a useful resource for new players, as they can help teach you. Sadly, dungeons aren't as popular as they once were. Although they have recently made changes to make it easier for new players. Dungeons are also still a great way to get experience.

There are eight dungeons in total. You will unlock a new dungeon in each tier of your progression, and each dungeon has two modes - "Story" and "Explorable".

  1. Ascalonian Catacombs

  2. Caudecus's Manor

  3. Twilight Arbor

  4. Sorrow's Embrace

  5. Citadel of Flame

  6. Honor of the Waves

  7. Crucible of Eternity

  8. The Ruined City of Arah

Tomes and Writs of Experience

Tomes and Writs can be obtained through many different methods in the game, primarily through sPvP and World vs World. Some can also be gained as part of the daily Login Reward systems.

A Tome of Knowledge will grant 100% of the difference between the players current level and the player's next level, while a Writ of Experience grants 5%. Trade in 20 writs to Miyani in Lion's Arch for a tome of Knowledge.

After level 80, they can be useful for gaining Spirit Shards, a valuable currency, or for leveling alts quickly - unless you really need the shards I would save them for quick alt leveling

Bonus Experience from Special Events

Special Events or Bonus events are events offering a bonus from Festivals. Such as killing mobs, doing the Wintersday Jumping Puzzle, or celebrating victories against the Elder Dragons.

Bonus Experience from Boosters

  • Black Lion Booster – 50%

  • Communal Boost Bonfire – 50%

  • Killstreak Experience Booster – 0-100% from Kills

  • Experience Booster – 50% + 100% from Kills

  • Birthday Booster – 100%

  • Celebration Booster – 100%

  • Winter’s Blessing – 10%

  • Lucky Draketail – 5%

  • Lucky Firecracker – 10%

A booster is a type of consumable that provides various effects, such as experience, increase in rewards or movement speed. Any remaining time of a booster effect remains on log out or character changing.

Bonus Experience on Kill

Your character gains experience when defeating an enemy, this is needed to level up your character. For Bonus XP, once an enemy spawns it will start increasing Bonus XP that will be awarded to players who defeat them.

Personal Story

If you are a fan of good lore and storytelling in games, you already have the incentive to complete your character's personal story; but if that wasn't enough, doing your personal story also gives you worthwhile gear, improvement of your skill as a player, and most importantly, experience.

Personal story has eight chapters, all divided. Each chapter unlocking ever 10 levels. Early chapters will be determined by the player’s choice of race, biography, and then later chapters being determined by choices made within the game.
